Looking for a Second Booster Seat? Check this out! Graco TurboBooster 8491 Cricket I already own the Graco TurboBooster with the back but needed a second booster seat for my husband's vehicle since...
After three years of hassling with “accurate” installation of various makes and models of car seats for a growing baby/toddler, it was a relief to finally hit booster seats at 40 pounds. Of course, there are still way too many choices with these also — backs, no backs, accessories such as cup holders, etc. We decided to go compact for ease in moving into and out of the car. That way when we want to go somewhere “sans kid”, it’s easy to leave behind (or in the trunk if you have a car). It’s also easy to move between cars if you only want to buy one seat but have two vehicles.
This is basically a lightweight, big-city-phone-book-sized plastic chair (no back), with removable and adjustable arms, and a cup holder that slides totally in or out on both of the front corners. Considering where they are located, I wouldn’t personally put a drink in the cup holders. I can just see a leg or knee knocking any decent sized drink out of them. They aren’t but a couple of inches deep. My tot likes to use them as “treasure stashes” for small toys, candy, whatever.
Our girl is tall enough that the seat boosts her up high enough for the seat belt to fall where it should across her chest and shoulder. However, if you need a little adjustment, the seat does come with an adjustable belt with plastic clip that can be used to hold the shoulder part of the seat belt off of the child’s neck. It attaches to the bottom of the back of the seat, and if not used, just lies behind the seat. If you don’t need it at all, you don’t have to attach it to the seat–it is a nylon belt that loops through itself to attach to the back of the seat.
Nothing holds the seat to the seat of your car, which is great for putting the seat in and taking it out. However, if you have the arms attached to the seat and you help your kid out (or even if you don’t do either), the seat will sometimes follow your kid out of the car. It’s not that big of a deal, but it is annoying.
The car seat is rated from 40-100 pounds (and 4-10 years old, but if you find a typical 10 year old willing to ride in a car seat, you let me know). In terms of maintenance, the cloth parts (on the arms and seat) do come off for washing — the arm rest covers are slipped on like socks and held on with velcro, and the seat cover is held on with bands around hooks, like most infant car seat covers. It’s “machine wash, drip dry”, so no fancy schmancy high dollar care.
Ours is black with a bright blue center on the seat, and some red in the curves of the armrests, so it’s actually quite attractive, I think. It’s about 16″ by 16″ and just about 4″ to 5″ high (the seat). The armrests push in and lock when plastic tabs pop through openings; to release the locks and take the arms off you just push the plastic tabs back through the holes and pull the arms out.
Our daughter took to this seat right away; it seems comfortable and roomy, and she really gets a kick out of her cup holders. I would recommend this seat for easy in/out maneuverability, easy care, nice looks, inexpensive price (about $20 at the local Walmart), and small size.
